Protecting dark skies is a Vermont tradition

It reflects a Vermont tradition of stewardship, restraint, practicality, and good taste: using light where it is needed and wasting less where it is not.

Why this matters

Dark skies are not just about astronomy. They matter for community character, energy savings, conservation, public safety, tourism, and quality of life. Better lighting means light where it is needed, when it is needed, in the right amount, and aimed in the right place.

Poorly designed lighting creates glare, wastes energy and money, affects wildlife, and gradually erodes one of the shared qualities that makes Vermont feel like Vermont.

At a time when many issues divide people, the night sky is one of the few things we all share. Protecting it is a practical, unifying way to reduce waste and preserve a defining part of Vermont’s landscape and character.
