DarkSky Vermont is a growing statewide effort to protect Vermont’s night skies through education, outreach, partnership, and practical solutions to reduce wasteful outdoor lighting.
We are currently working toward official chapter status with DarkSky International. In the meantime, we are building a strong grassroots network of people and organizations across Vermont who care about stewardship, good lighting, conservation, community character, and the nighttime environment.
Dark-sky protection in Vermont is not just about astronomy. It is about using light where it is needed, reducing waste where it is not, and protecting a shared part of Vermont’s landscape and character.
What we do
DarkSky Vermont works to:
- educate the public about light pollution, dark skies, and responsible outdoor lighting
- support better lighting practices through practical guidance and community engagement
- collaborate with towns, organizations, schools, parks, and local leaders across Vermont
- build a stronger statewide movement for stewardship of the nighttime environment
How we work
Much of our organizing, discussion, and coordination takes place through our Google Group, where members and supporters share ideas, announcements, resources, and opportunities for involvement.
We welcome participation from people across Vermont who want to help protect the night through education, outreach, better lighting, and community action.
Leadership team
- Jon McCann — Chapter Lead
- George Springston — Science Lead
- Susan Yost — Secretary
- Caylie See — Outreach Lead
- Paula Marks — Education Lead
- Suzanne Wirak — Member at Large
This preliminary leadership structure is not meant to exclude anyone from meaningful participation. To the contrary, DarkSky Vermont needs more members and welcomes anyone, regardless of background, to get involved.
