What is a Night Ranger?
The night is not empty. It is habitat.
DarkSky Vermont’s Night Ranger program invites young people to discover what happens after sunset and understand how thoughtful choices about outdoor lighting can help wildlife.
Through games, observations, experiments, and hands-on activities, Night Rangers explore the natural rhythms of day and night, investigate the effects of artificial light, and learn practical ways to protect the nighttime environment.
The animal challenge is the first activity in a growing program designed for community events, families, youth organizations, and—eventually—broader use in schools.

NIGHT RANGER ACTIVITY 01
When does this animal come alive?
Meet six Vermont animals and decide whether each is usually most active during the day, around dawn and dusk, or after nightfall.
Who am I?
Monarch butterfly
I need warmth and daylight for most of my flying and feeding.
Challenge complete
The night has a new ranger.
A natural note: An animal’s activity can shift with season, weather, food, age, location, and nearby human activity. The game teaches the pattern most commonly associated with each species.

A Night Ranger notices the world after sunset and promises to use light wisely. Say the oath aloud to complete your Night Ranger journey.

Four ways to protect the dark at home
You do not need special equipment to be a Night Ranger. Small, thoughtful choices about light can make home more welcoming to wildlife and preserve the natural rhythm of night.

Use light only when needed
Switch outdoor lights off when they are not serving a purpose, or use a timer or motion control.

Aim light downward
Use shielded fixtures and direct light toward the ground so it stays on the area where it is useful.

Keep brightness low
Choose the lowest level of light that comfortably and safely does the job.

Choose warmer light
Look for warm-colored lighting and avoid harsh blue-white glare whenever possible.
A Night Ranger notices unnecessary light—and helps others find a better way.

Night Ranger is a hands-on DarkSky Vermont outreach program—not yet a formal school curriculum. We are developing the activity toward a broader, school-ready collection of age-appropriate lessons, printable materials, digital games, and guided investigations.
We welcome educators, naturalists, libraries, camps, youth organizations, and curriculum specialists as collaborators and program hosts. Your experience can help shape resources that are useful, engaging, and practical for young people across Vermont.
